Is the Quartz Craze Cooling Off? Why I Still Love Real Stone

For a while, it seemed like every kitchen renovation included the same thing: white quartz countertops with gray veins. And I understand why. They look clean, coordinate with almost anything, and offer a consistent appearance. But I think some of that excitement is starting to wear off. When you see a similar finish in house after house, you start appreciating materials with a little more individuality.

For me, that’s where real stone comes in. Granite, marble, and quartzite have movement and variation that nature created. Some slabs are quiet and understated. Others look like something you would hang on a wall. There’s something appealing about knowing the pattern in your kitchen isn’t exactly the same as the one down the street.

We recently put granite in one of our rental properties, and I love how it turned out. It has earthy grays, whites, and black hues that give it character without overwhelming the room. It feels grounded and natural, with enough variation to work with different cabinet colors and finishes over time.

While we were shopping, we also saw some stunning black granite with white streaks running through it. Those slabs really caught my attention. Against wood cabinets or a softer white kitchen, I could see that being an incredible focal point. Sometimes the stone itself is all the decoration a room needs.

Granite Has More Variety Than You Might Remember

When someone says “granite,” a lot of people immediately picture the busy brown countertops that went into so many houses years ago. But that’s only one small part of what’s available.

If you like grays, whites, and black, here are a few names to look for:

  • Silver Cloud: A mix of gray, ivory, white, and darker mineral details, often with flowing movement.
  • Viscount White: A lighter granite with gray and black veining. Some slabs have much stronger movement than others.
  • Via Lactea: A dramatic black granite with flowing white veins. The name refers to the Milky Way, which makes sense when you see it.
  • Negresco: Another beautiful dark option, commonly sold as granite, with white and gray veining against a black or charcoal background.

These are examples of the general looks we liked, rather than an identification of the particular granite we installed. Stone names can also vary between suppliers, and two slabs with the same name can look surprisingly different. Go see the actual slab before choosing.

Choose Something You’ll Still Enjoy After the Trend Passes

I’m not saying everyone needs to rip out their quartz. There are beautiful quartz countertops, and they can be a practical choice. But I do think natural stone deserves another look, especially if your impression of granite is based on what builders were installing twenty years ago.

It’s also worth understanding the materials. Engineered quartz is manufactured using mineral ingredients and binders. Quartzite, despite the similar name, is natural stone. Granite, marble, and quartzite each have different care requirements, so appearance shouldn’t be the only consideration.

For our rental, granite gave us the combination of character and practicality we wanted. We’ll maintain it appropriately, including sealing as recommended for the particular stone.

Working in real estate, I see how quickly a finish can become the thing everyone thinks they have to replace. My preference is to choose materials I enjoy on their own merits. Real wood. Real stone. Colors that feel comfortable to live with.

The granite we just installed reminded me why I keep coming back to those things. It doesn’t need to look identical from one end to the other. The variation is what makes it beautiful.
